Course description:

The course consists of:

  • 1 Zoom guided discussion; 1:30 minutes
  • Homework assignment
  • End-of-course exam 

Certification requirements:

  • The homework assignment must be completed and turned in to the instructor.
  • The homework assignment must meet the standards outlined in the course learning objectives.
  • The homework assignment must be evaluated and accepted by the instructor before students are eligible to take the end-of-course exam.
  • Students must achieve a passing score of 80% or higher on the end-of-course exam.
  • Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of completion.
  • Students who successfully complete all 5 SCMT courses are eligible to take the final Certification Exam. The Certification Exam is a comprehensive exam that measures the students’ knowledge of the learning objectives from all five courses.

  • Discuss why we have Workers’ Compensation in California
  • Explain the “Exclusive Remedy” in Worker’s Compensation
  • Explain how the costs of Workers’ Compensation affect the mission and the employees of public entities
  • Explain the five Workers’ Compensation benefits
  • Explain the employer’s administrative requirements when an employee files a Workers’ Compensation claim
  • Explain the employer’s medical controls and how they affect Workers’ Compensation costs
  • Explain key factors in managing a Workers’ Compensation claim
  • Explain Maximum Medical Improvement
  • Explain Supplemental Job Displacement Benefits
  • Explain the benefits of a Return to Work Program and how to implement it
  • Explain and apply claim management guide lines to non-litigated Workers’ Compensation claims
  • Review the benefits of effective claims management 

Homework: 

Students: 

  • Contact their Risk Manager.
  • Request a 1-3 year Workers’ Compensation Loss Run Report for their organization where they work, e.g., Public Works, Facilities, Human Resources, Health and Human Services, Administration, General Services, Sheriff/Police, Fire, Transportation, etc.
  • Tell the Risk Manager the information will be used for the purpose of loss analysis and prevention.
  • Exclude employee personal information such as name, social security number, and claim number.
  • Bring the Loss Run Report to class for the SMCT course, “Safety Management: What is it?” 

End-of-Course Exam: 

  • The end-of-course exam measures the students’ knowledge of the course learning objectives.
  • The exam consists of 20 true/false questions.
