Safety Management Certification: Safety Management, What is It?

Course description:

The course consists of:

  • 1 Zoom guided discussion; 1:30 minutes
  • Homework assignment
  • End-of-course exam 

Pre-Course Requirement: 

Students:

  • Contact their Risk Manager.
  • Request a 1-3 year Workers’ Compensation Loss Run Report for their organization where they work, e.g., Public Works, Facilities, Human Resources, Health and Human Services, Administration, General Services, Sheriff/Police, Fire, Transportation, etc.
  • Tell the Risk Manager the information will be used for the purpose of loss analysis and prevention.
  • Exclude employee personal information such as name, social security number, and claim number.
  • Bring the Loss Run Report to class for the SMCT course, “Safety Management: What is it?” 

Certification requirements:

  • The homework assignment must be completed and turned in to the instructor.
  • The homework assignment must meet the standards outlined in the course learning objectives.
  • The homework assignment must be evaluated and accepted by the instructor before students are eligible to take the end-of-course exam.
  • Students must achieve a passing score of 80% or higher on the end-of-course exam.
  • Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of completion.
  • Students who successfully complete all 5 SCMT courses are eligible to take the final Certification Exam. The Certification Exam is a comprehensive exam that measures the students’ knowledge of the learning objectives from all five courses.

Guided discussion learning objectives: 

  • Discuss Safety Management, what it is, what are its goals, how to perform it, and why it is important
  • Discuss the duties of the senior management team
  • Discuss the duties of the supervisors
  • Discuss the duties of the safety officer
  • Discuss the duties of  the employees
  • Discuss the tools to measure safety performance
  • Describe a loss run report
  • Explain how to conduct loss analysis
  • Explain what other organizational resources have loss information 

Homework: 

Students conduct a loss analysis of their organization’s Workers’ Compensation Loss Run Report. They will determine the evaluation period, total number of claims, frequency of medical only claims, frequency of indemnity claims, types of claims that were most costly, loss sources, loss costs, loss causes, loss trends, and more. 

Students bring their completed homework assignment to the SMC Course, “Developing Effective Control Measures”. It will be referred to in class.

End-of-Course Exam: 

  • The end-of-course exam measures the students’ knowledge of the course learning objectives.
  • The exam consists of 20 true/false questions.
