Public entities across California continue to face rising liability costs driven by nuclear verdicts and large settlements, placing increasing pressure on agency budgets and general funds. In response, PRISM and public entity partners are advocating for meaningful tort reform to help address these growing challenges.
A coalition led by the California Association of Joint Powers Authorities (CAJPA) is seeking support for reforms including tort caps, proportional liability for economic damages, and enhanced evidentiary standards for certain claims. PRISM members who wish to add their agency's voice to the coalition effort are encouraged to download and review the coalition letter linked here. If your entity wants to be included as a signatory to the letter, then send the following to Mike Pott and Jen Hamelin:
-
A copy of your entity’s logo;
-
The name of an individual from your entity who should be included on the letter with the logo. We also need that person’s job title and signature; and
-
A statement confirming that your entity would like to join the coalition letter.
For more information, please don’t hesitate to contact Mike Pott and Jen Hamelin. Thank you for your consideration and continued engagement on this important issue!
