Vendor Impersonation Fraud and How to Avoid it
Email based fraud attempts continue to impact PRISM members. One method that we continue to see is vendor impersonation fraud. One of the most common forms of this is when a scammer submits an email to a member posing as a vendor. The scammer will submit an invoice and/or direct that future payments be sent to a specific account that is accessible by the scammer. Some entities have acted upon these emails and processed payments that have unknowingly gone to scammers. We have seen this happen for payments in the low five figures all the way up to several million dollars.

A simple, yet effective, way to avoid paying a scammer is to have your Finance Department contact any vendor who attempts to make a change to payment information via email. A simple phone call to the vendor to verify the new instructions can help your entity to avoid making an incorrect payment and will also help avoid a cyber claim. For more information on what your entity can do to avoid email based fraud claims, please click here. We encourage you to share this information with your Finance Team and any others within your organization who might benefit from receiving this information.
