Job Description:

The Position This is an FLSA exempt management position under the general direction of the MERMA Executive Director. The Loss Control Manager provides a full range of loss control services to member districts in order to establish best safety practices, prevent employee illness and injury, reduce the cost of Worker Compensation claims and act as an expert occupational safety resource for all member districts.

Specific Duties Include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide timely consultation to members on safety topics specific to their operations.
  • Maintain communication and collaboration with the claims administrator to provide loss control services to member districts.
  • Provide ergonomic evaluations to work groups or individuals as requested by the member district or in collaboration with the claims administrator.
  • Assist in developing and managing member return to work programs.
  • Write reports and maintain documentation of services provided to members.
  • Develop policies and procedures for member districts as part of their safety program.
  • Review loss control policies and procedures and update as needed.
  • Conduct periodic safety program reviews of member districts including site safety inspections.
  • Provide on-site safety training as needed or requested by member.
  • Assist districts in compliance with regulatory aspects of the School Integrated Pest Management Plan. (IPM)
  • Review new claims and conduct follow up investigations regarding causation and prevention of injuries as needed.
  • Prepare reports for the MERMA Board, Executive Committee or others as needed.
  • Review claims data to determine trends and areas of concern with follow up as needed.
  • Maintain up to date information on the MERMA website.
  • Provide monthly training topics via member newsletter.
  • Administer the Matching Safety Funds Program in accordance with the program policy.
  • Assist in providing MERMA facility maintenance and project management in order to assure that MERMA property is safe and secure for staff and tenants.
  • Participate in professional development courses and attend conferences or seminars as approved by the Executive Director.

Requirements:

TECHNICAL TRAINING OR KNOWLEDGE:

  • Maintains a current knowledge of Cal-OSHA, Cal-EPA, Cal-DPR, and other regulations and codes governing school safety requirements.
  • Good working knowledge of Windows computer programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and editing software. Proficient in internet research and use of Adobe Acrobat. Ability to set up electronic files and records.
  • Ability to develop written safety policies/procedures and training documents.
  • Ability to present classroom training in an effective manner.
  • Good understanding of industrial hygiene standards and hazardous materials operations.
  • Good understanding of ergonomics and body mechanics.

EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience in school district loss control/safety management, insurance based public agency loss control or public agency safety management is highly desirable.
  • Bachelor's degree related to business management, industrial safety, industrial hygiene and 4 years of verifiable experience in environmental, health and safety employment or an Associate Degree in industrial safety or related field and 8 years of verifiable experience in environmental, health and safety employment.
  • A Master's degree in business management, environmental health and safety or related field is desirable.
  • Loss control or safety related professional certifications are desirable; CSP, CIH, ARM, or similar nationally recognized designations.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License
