Overview

Trees and sidewalks across California are cause for concern for many public entities. While necessary in many ways, the slow deterioration of these assets creates dangerous conditions that often result in injury or damage.

Join PRISM Senior Risk Control Specialist, Chandler Wright, for this interactive workshop that will focus on  the operational decisions that influence liability exposure, including inspection practices, complaint response, hazard prioritization, and documentation.

Participants will examine common tree and sidewalk conditions and discuss the steps that should be taken to help prevent them becoming dangerous conditions. Through practical examples and table-based discussions, the workshop will emphasize how consistent inspection routines, timely complaint response, and clear documentation practices will help to support a well-rounded risk mitigation strategy for trees and sidewalks.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Identify common tree and sidewalk conditions that may constitute a dangerous condition.
• Recognize how inspection activities, complaints, and field observations contribute to actual and constructive notice.
• Evaluate operational responses to common hazards, including when to correct, monitor, or prioritize based on risk and location.
• Describe the essential components of an inspection program for trees and sidewalks.
• Apply practical documentation practices that support tracking and follow-up.
• Analyze real-world scenarios to identify gaps in inspection, maintenance, and response practices.

 
This workshop will be particularly helpful for those working in Risk Management, Public Works, or the person responsible for managing trees and sidewalks.
