Road Maintenance

Geographic Information Systems for Road Maintenance

One of the leading causes of liability loss for public agencies are claims arising from dangerous conditions of roadways and improper road design. PRISM Risk Control researched the best methods for controlling this risk and found that the most efficient and cost effective method is to have a robust preventative maintenance and inspection program.

The best way to do this is to leverage the often under-utilized Geographic Information System (GIS) to prioritize and coordinate inspections and pavement maintenance in the most cost effective manner.

Implementing a GIS program is likely to be a significant undertaking for members, so we developed this guide: Utilizing Geographic Information Systems for Road Maintenance

Road Design and Maintenance Best Practice

The Road Design and Maintenance best practice is also available as a supplemental and complementary document. It can be used either with a GIS program, or as a standalone resource.
