Job Description:

Under general supervision, this position supports CIRA's risk management team by developing, delivering, and training members on available software platforms, assists in developing and updating loss control resources and training, advises member agencies on the wide range of resources available to them, and assists risk teams with drafting member or pool reports.

This position may include participating in on-site, virtual, or hybrid risk assessment visits and offering consultative assistance to member agencies on risk management/safety issues. This position provides opportunities for professional development and career growth within risk management.

This position is ideal for recent graduates or early-career professionals with foundational experience in risk management or safety. Reporting to the Risk Control Manager, you will support the delivery of risk assessment, training, and compliance services to our members. The role is primarily remote, offering flexibility for a California-based candidate, with occasional in-office collaboration (e.g., 1-2 days per month in our Folsom, CA office) and periodic travel (25% or less) for on-site assessments, training sessions, or board meetings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist and support the CIRA risk control program's development, administration, and operation.
  • Support the implementation of CIRA-provided software solutions to aid members and improve their loss control programs.
  • Provide CIRA pooled member staff training on various topics, including software solutions and risk resources.
  • Assist in developing and updating occupational health and safety training programs customized for public agencies, including developing course materials.
  • Help develop risk management recommendations, prepare reports, and monitor members' compliance with recommendations.
  • Prepare reports following best practices in business communication, with attention to technical accuracy and department SOPs.
  • Assist in responding to safety and/or risk management consultations and training requests.
  • Help efficiently plan and schedule risk management assessments and training based on member requests or specific needs.
  • Participate in on-site and occasionally virtual or hybrid risk assessment/consultative visits to evaluate a member agency's safety and risk management programs and facilities.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and all others contacted during the course of work.

Requirements:

Qualifications Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in risk management, occupational health and safety, business administration, or a related field (or equivalent coursework/experience).
  • Entry-level with 1-3 years of relevant experience, such as internships, co-ops, or part-time roles in risk management, safety compliance, insurance, or public administration. Fresh graduates with demonstrated interest through academic projects or certifications (e.g., OSHA 10-hour card) are encouraged to apply.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Skilled at rapidly mastering new technologies and simplifying them for diverse audiences through engaging and effective instruction.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel for data analysis, Word for reporting) and familiarity with database management tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex safety concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a remote environment.
  • Ability to travel 25% or less within California (valid driver's license required; mileage reimbursement provided).
  • Commitment to confidentiality and ethical handling of sensitive information related to public entities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of California-specific regulations for public sector risk management (e.g., Cal-OSHA, EPA, NFPA, Government Code claims procedures).
  • Experience with virtual collaboration tools (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams) and basic project management software.
