Description:

The County of Yuba is currently recruiting for the position of Environmental Health Specialist I/II/III in the Community Development and Services Agency. This position will perform professional inspection and enforcement of State and Local codes and regulations to protect the public and environmental health of the citizens of the County. This is a flexibly staffed position, depending on background, experience and qualifications the position may be filled directly at the Environmental Health Specialist III level.

Ideal Candidate:

Ideal candidate will have knowledge of the principles and practices of sampling and testing of various water, wastewater, soils and other samples, as well as recordkeeping and report preparation. They will have skill in making routine and thorough inspections and investigations; analyzing the results of inspections and developing basic mitigation and/or enforcement strategies. Interpreting, applying and explaining applicable laws, codes and regulations is required. The ideal candidate can listen carefully to others to understand the points being made and ask questions as appropriate; accept criticism and perform calmly. The ability to make rational judgments and decisions in a timely manner, particularly in situations involving potential risks is essential.

Required Qualifications:

Minimum Level I: Bachelor’s degree from accredited college with major coursework in Environmental Health, Sanitation, Biological Science, or related field and a letter of approval from the California State Department of Health Services to enter the Environmental Specialist training program.

Preferred: In addition to the minimum, some demonstrated experience in the environmental health field in a paid, intern or volunteer capacity.

Minimum Level II: Bachelor’s degree as indicated above and California Registration as an Environmental Health Specialist.

Preferred: In addition to the II-Level minimum, two or more years of professional level environmental health experience at least equivalent to the County’s class of Environmental Health Specialist I.

Minimum Level III: Bachelor’s Degree as indicated above, California Registration as an Environmental Health Specialist and three years of professional level environmental health experience.

Preferred: In addition to the minimum, an advanced degree with major coursework as indicated above and up to four years of professional level environmental health experience with at least one year equivalent to the County’s class of Environmental Health Specialist II.

All candidates are required by the final filing date to provide proof of either registration, eligibility letter and/or documentation of effort to obtain eligibility letter from the California Department of Public Health for the Environmental Health Specialist Program (REHS). If not registered, candidates should apply for the letter immediately.

Special Requirements: Must possess and maintain throughout employment a valid California Class C Driver’s License.

Salary Range:

Level I Hiring Range: 3,883 –4,272 Monthly + Benefits

Level II Hiring Range: 4,366 –4,803 Monthly + Benefits

Level III Hiring Range: 4,637–5,101 Monthly + Benefits
